Cabretta Leather Golf Gloves: What Cabretta Is and Why We Drum-Dye It

Nova golf glove on the course: cognac glove grip

Every Nova glove is made from premium Cabretta leather, drum-dyed, not a coat sprayed on top. Here is what that means and why it matters on the course.

What is Cabretta leather?

Cabretta is a fine leather from hair sheep: breeds that grow hair rather than wool. Without wool, the hide grows a tighter, smoother grain, so the leather can be thin and still strong. That combination, thin, soft and tough, is why Cabretta is the standard for premium golf gloves: you feel the club through it, and it holds the grip.

Drum-dyed, not coated

Many coloured gloves get their colour from a finish applied to the surface. Ours are drum-dyed: the leather is tumbled in dye so the colour goes into the hide. In our words, “the colour is the leather, not a coat on top.” That is what lets a colour like Cognac keep its richness as it wears, instead of wearing off.

How a Cabretta glove should feel

  • Close. Cut for a second-skin fit, with no loose leather in the palm.
  • Breathable. Perforated across the palm and fingers, so your hand breathes through all eighteen.
  • Snug at first. Cabretta softens with wear and moulds to your hand. Between two sizes? Size down: it gives a little as it breaks in (Size & Fit).

Looking after a leather glove

General leather-glove care goes a long way: let it dry flat at room temperature after a round (not on a heater or in a hot car), and keep it flat in your bag rather than balled up in a pocket.
